Key terms, including what is not covered
- Coverage packages
- State minimum: the lowest liability your state allows, liability only. Standard: 50/100/50 liability only. Full: 100/300/100 liability plus collision and comprehensive for your own car. Premium: 250/500/100 plus collision and comprehensive. Uninsured motorist cover matches your liability limits, and medical payments are $1,000 on state minimum and $5,000 on the other packages.
- Collision and comprehensive
- Collision pays to repair your car after a crash, whoever is at fault. Comprehensive pays for theft, fire, glass, hail, flood and hitting an animal. Both pay the car's actual cash value, minus a deductible. A lender or lease company usually requires both.
- Financed or leased cars
- If your car is financed or leased, the lender or lease company almost always requires collision and comprehensive cover, often with a deductible of $1,000 or less, and asks to be named on the policy. Liability-only options (state minimum or standard) usually break those terms. Check your agreement.
- Gap insurance
- Gap insurance pays the difference between the car's value and what you still owe on the loan or lease if the car is written off. It is not offered in this demo; lenders and dealers commonly sell it.
- Uninsured motorist
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist cover pays for your injuries (and, where offered, car damage) if the other driver is at fault and has no or too little insurance. In this demo it is included on every package at the same limits as your liability cover.
- What is not covered
- Not covered: damage to your own car on liability-only options; wear and tear and mechanical breakdown; personal belongings in the car; rideshare driving unless declared; racing; and drivers excluded by name. This is the demo's policy summary; a real policy document would govern.
- Deductible
- Collision and comprehensive each have their own deductible, paid per claim. Liability claims have no deductible. A higher deductible means a lower price.
- Liability
- Auto liability pays for injuries and damage you cause to other people and their property in an accident, including legal costs, up to your limits (per person / per accident / property damage, e.g. 100/300/100 means $100,000 / $300,000 / $100,000).
- How claims work
- Claims are made online or by phone, in Spanish or English. (Demo: no real claims are handled.)
- Free look period
- You have 15 days after buying to cancel for a full refund, as long as no claim has been made.
- Service in Spanish
- Quotes, policy documents and claims support are available in Spanish and English, by phone and chat.
